Spinning Classes


Drop Spindle with Kathy D'Andria

 


Learn how to drop spindle spin!  This class will teach you the basics of spinning yarn on a drop spindle.  We will discuss fiber preparation, drafting, and how to finish up your spun yarn so you can use it in a project.  Each student will receive a drop spindle, instruction sheet, and alpaca roving.  


Materials and Class Fee: $20

Knitting Classes


Cornerstone Hat Knit-a-long with Glenn Tinsley


 


Come knit the most popular hat out there right now. A variation of many different hats by many different designers, this one will be your own version. We will check your guage, measure your head and write in the numbers on your pattern sheet. The sample used a skein of Cornerstone sport weight alpaca held double throughout. Circulars or double points can be used, and if you prefer, we can adapt your pattern to single points. The yarn will be available for purchase in the "Yarn Barn" prewound into two balls. Either bring your favorite needles size 9 or purchase them there. This will be an ongoing knit-a-long during the day.


Prerequisites: Ability to knit and purl, cast on and bind off.


Materials and Class Fee:  Free (provide your own materials - can be purchased through our store, the Yarn Barn)




Cable Knitting with Lauren Lombard

 

Learn the technique of knitting cables while making a cabled coffee cup cozy.


Prerequisites: Basic knitting skills (cast on, knit, purl, bind off)


Materials:  Participants will need size 6 knitting needles (can be purchased at our store, The Yarn Barn)

Remaining items will be provided in a kit (see below for cost)


Class Fee: $10 (includes all materials except knitting needles)





Alpaca Slippers with Michelle Hall

Beginning Entrelac with Rusty Boyd

 

Students will be learning the basics of Entrelac, a short row knitting technique which creates a woven or basket weave look to knitting.  They will also practice a knitted cast on to begin the project. 


Prerequisites: Students should be able to cast on, bind off, knit, purl, ssk, and k2tog.


Class Fee:  $15 (bring your own materials - size 8 or 9 needle (circulars work best) and a worsted weight yarn with long color changes such as Bernat Mosaic (2 should make the scarf)


Materials Fee: $10 (if you do not bring your own)







Crochet Classes


Beginning Crochet (Wristlet) with Hazel Rowe

 


Use basic crochet skills like single crochet and double crochet to make a wonderful alpaca wristlet. Your wristlet is perfect for trips to fiber festivals to hold small items like your phone, ID, and monies so you don’t need to keep digging out of your goody bags. Keeps small items handy! So come join the crochet fun that requires minimal crochet experience.


Materials and Class Fee:  $10





Broomstick Lace Crochet with Heather Boyd

 

Students will be learning the basics of Broomstick Lace, a crochet lace technique which uses a large knitting needle to make long loops between single crochet rows. 


Prerequisites:  Students should be able to chain, single crochet, double crochet, and pull up loops.


Class Fee:  $10 (Bring your own materials - you will need size K crochet hook, worsted weight yarn (approximately 200 yards will make a scarf) and a size 35 knitting needle)


Materials Fee:  $15 ( if you do not bring your own)






Felting Classes


Needle Felting with Cindy French

 

Needle felting is a technique of painting or sculpting with wool or alpaca.  Add texture and color to sweaters, coats, purses, quilts and more using wool and alpaca roving or yarn.  Create 3-dimensional shapes using the same technique – for instance beads or pincushions. 

Wool roving and background will be supplied to students.  I’ll have needles and foam for use during class.

Nuno Felting Basics with Kat Allison


Nuno felting is a fun and fascinating way to learn the basics of wet felting.  We'll be using scrumptious China silk, silk organza and cotton scrim as a base for wool felting.  Nuno felting makes great wall hangings, mid-weight fabric for clothing and some very unique decorator pieces.  The process is fun, a little labor intensive and guaranteed to get your feet wet.


**Wear old or waterproof shoes, and bring some dry socks.

Wet Felt Neck Warmer with Hazel Rowe

 



Felt yourself a cozy, stylish neck warmer for this winter. You will receive a kit with hand-dyed coordinating color fibers to make your neck warmer. Wool, bamboo and a little silk and sparkle to make your winter brighter. We will discuss basic wet felt techniques and learn how what we make in class can be used to make many other felt accessories and garments. It’s all good clean, soapy fun for all!

Dyeing Classes


Introduction to Hand Dyeing Yarn with Kathy D'Andria

 


Have you ever wanted to learn how to dye your own yarn?  This class will teach you the steps you need to take to produce some fun colored yarn.  We will discuss yarn preparation before and after dyeing and some different dyeing techniques.  Each student will participate in dyeing their own skein of white 100% Alpaca handspun yarn which they can take with them at the end of the class.  All dyes and equipment will be provided.
